In 2004, Hitachi GST plans a substantial manufacturing expansion for the 4 gigabyte (GB) Microdrive product at its Thailand facility. This development is being spurred by the proliferation of hard disk-based storage in consumer electronic devices, especially portable digital music players.

Toshiba is among the few companies that still produces DVD technology. The company has unveilled quality drives in the past, and currently, after quite some time of "inactivity", comes up with the new SD-R5272 dual format recorder. The drive is compatible with all current formats such as DVD-R/RW and +R/RW, CDs as well as DVD-RAM (read).

Seagate at WinHEC demonstrated in head-to-head tests using Intel's IOMeter benchmark that its Barracuda 7,200-rpm Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive with Native Command Queuing (NCQ) technology equals or exceeds the performance of the latest 10,000-rpm SATA hard drives on the market. Seagate also announced it is shipping its Barracuda 7200.7 SATA hard drives with NCQ technology to direct OEM customers next month.
